LGBT Representation that Matters (to me)
This video I talk about about some gay stuff. Representation in games and shows; and tiny bit about how my own experience causes me to care about this stuff.
This might be the only ever "pride month" video I ever make, but it'll be cool to have this here just so people know what I think about certain things through me talking about some fictional characters.

When a dreamer awakens. What happens to the inhabitants of the dream? Or the world that was traveled. Or the pain that was felt. The experience will linger sometimes. And the dreamer will remember. Some aspects of the dream will travel the veil, and live with the dreamer in the waking world. There are no credit here. Because this isn't the end. Newest of the fallen. I love BL1 only because I played it when it came out so I had no other Borderlands game to compare it to. I loved the Diablo style music and its soundtrack is one of my favorites. BL2 is easily one of my all time favorite games (the story is amazing) and the Tiny Tina DLC is fantastic. I love the gameplay mechanics of BL3 and the world building. I loved the other planets and the expansion on the lore of vaults and sirens. But the actual story of 3 fell so short for me.

I feel that the trilogy is what its like to live with depression. Dark Souls 1 is when you realize there's more to your life. You've been stuck in this tiny bleak cell, barely human, and someone gives you a lifeline: a key. The key can be anything: a sudden realization, meeting someone who truly is in your corner, even an internet group. With it, you're able to fight and fight and move forward. It's a struggle, but you meet people, you conquer challenges, you discover amazing new things you would never have seen back in your bleak pit. You find new tools and weapons along the way that help you. You keep moving forward despite not really caring about the end goal, you're just enthralled by overcoming all these challenges that seemed impossible before. At the end of the game, there's a choice, but what you pick doesn't really matter. What matters is that you get to make it. Dark Souls 2 is that period of "now what" after you've gotten over the mountain. An underemphasized thing about depression is it never really goes away: it's always there in the background. You can't get rid of the darksign, it's always a part of you. A lot of people stagnate in Majula, too afraid to move any farther and risk what peace of mind they've already found. It's harder, things seem unfair, you're getting attacked on all sides all the time. But you learn to cope. You take things on one at a time. You become more adaptable (lol). You get through. There is no real choice at the end. There's just the continuity of life. It's what you make of it. Dark Souls 3 is where you are after everything. Things feel smoother. You have more options. You're in a place where you can truly help others, just as others have helped you. Even the hardest challenges in the series don't slow you down. You've been through it all before, and you're enjoying yourself. Even at the end of everything, you're still there, fighting for your own sake, happy. Dark Souls got me through a lot. I'm not fully convinced I'd be alive without it, to be perfectly honest.

This will forever be the only good Dark Souls. Balanced difficulty, no matter what build you use it works and its fun from start to finish. Yes there is some bs like Bed of Chaos or Capra Demon but that is very minor. Then you go to Dark Souls 3 and melee builds are so crap that every enemy feels like it has an unfair advantage against you unless you use nothing but ranged builds. And people still keep saying you can win that whole game by R1 spamming when alomost 90% of every enemy has infinite poise, and that last 10% can randomly ignore the fact that you are staggering them, ignore the poise completely and stagger you back. ITS FUN, VERY FUN, NOT WORTH GETTING THROUGH IT PLUS THE DLCS, FUCK THAT GAME.

i had to stop playing cuphead, even the first boss had too much on screen for me to keep up. if there is a lot happening on screen i can't focus and my anxiety will rapidly spike, i don't know what it is but i cannot play games like that, it isn't a situation were i am bad at the game and need to "get good" its that i literally cannot focus on what is going on and the game is literally unplayable for me. all games including souls games need an accessibility mode and if not that they should at least have options and the hard-G gamers need to realize gate keeping accessibility only hurts the medium as a whole. having played the souls games since dark souls 1 i have seen the term "get good" turn from a bit of a mean spirited in-joke to a form of bullying and would not be surprised if people would unironically say that people like your brother should just get good, that having a disability is some kind of moral failing and that games should only be made for those fortunate enough to be born without some kind hurdle that makes certain activities difficult or impossible.

BL3 WAS woke compared to BL2. Just because there was hidden elements of it in BL2 that doesn't mean turning it up to 11 will keep it acceptable. Game companies are going after the sweet ESG score for dirty money and they don't deny it. The problem is not that it exists, but that it's fucking everywhere!

I feel like other than the gameplay, BL3 fails at all other things that made BL1 and BL2 great. It lacks atmosphere of the first while failing at the edgy dark humour of the second one, despite leaning in that direction heavily and trying hard to achieve that vibe, failing miserably. It's like they tried to sanitize it, among other things, which is something that was bound to never work. Also I'm very salty about the Torgue guns in that game. While they both looked and felt like shit to me in the second game, I fell in love with their designes in the third. Yet I still absolutely hated ridiculously low projectile speeds and all that. Wish I had a PC so I could just fix that with some mod or even simply tweaking a few values in game's config.

  • @coltonthorpe7812

BL1 is still actually my favorite. I know that makes me the minority, but the General Knox DLC was the moment where everything really clicked. The writing, the voice acting, the game play; BL2 always felt like the child of the general Knox DLC. BL1 also always had that cool sci-fi western/mad Max vibe that they never really brought back for any of the other games. The characters in BL1 also never came across as "clownish" or quite so over the top, they were definitely not serious, but they seemed more like people that had been driven insane on an insane planet rather than characters that were written to simply be jokes. Finally, and my biggest thing with BL1, was that the guns just felt better. Revolvers felt massive and heavy, machine guns had a satisfying chug, shotguns felt slow and powerful. The guns from BL2 and 3 all felt kinda like paintball guns. Just my thoughts, and I know a lot of people will disagree. If you have slept on BL1, I just recommend picking it up and giving it a try. Don't judge it by the first two or so hours, let it find it's groove.

Borderlands is a series that struggles to retain its identity, and I think this video follows the issue as a throughline from 1 to 2 to 3, with Tales Of sitting somewhere in the middle. Borderlands 1 was ambitious, but differed greatly from the promises that came before release. If you had seen the pre-release information and the final product, you'd probably feel like you'd been lied to. That said, the final product was strong on its own merits, developing an idea of fringe society and the people that often fall into it. It created a sci-fi world with megacorporations, alien artifacts, and glorified treasure hunters with a sometimes bleak sense of humor. In many ways it treated the environment and mood as an equal member of the cast. The lack of fanfare and somber, subtle music sold a bleak existence of people in the literal "borderlands" caught between multiple megacorps all vying for power in a contest that doesn't matter for them in the slightest. Few characters existed solely as a joke, and our most vocal companion is Angel, whose kindly manner fills a role not dissimilar to Navi/Tatl/Midna in Legend of Zelda, guiding us but also giving a hint of companionship in an otherwise pretty empty and violent world. It's why she, TK, Zed, and Scooter were so beloved as characters. The RPG elements, crazy damage numbers, and MMO Loot system made the game have a unique feel that was appealing that fit in well with the storytelling. 2 by comparison took the series to its heights by emphasizing the weirdness of the world. If after ten minutes in you haven't realized that the game is aiming to be irreverent, you're in for the wrong game. Handsome Jack is comedic, but also casually brutal to the point that we can quickly understand that he's not exactly good for Pandora's people in the long or short term. The humorous take in some ways improves the setting, letting us grip the casual indifference of megacorps towards the planet's colonists while also enjoying how utterly strange we ourselves are as part of the game. The vocal personalities of all the PC's really sell us on the fun we're having. In many ways, it plays with the idea of being a game more than any other, with quests like "KYS" or the Assault on Dragon Keep DLC playing with gameplay concepts in real-time. It's funny, and the gameplay is tighter in all but UVH, which means you can play many different ways and still have a good time. It's probably as good a sequel as 1 could have gotten. Bigger than the former, but unfortunately also drifting in tone already. 3 then arrives and you can see that attempt to chase the same height of 2, but ultimately missing the mark. In gameplay and setting, this game exceeds beyond 2, with vibrant and different planets that let us get more directly involved in the corporate warfare that we'd seen in 1 and 2 while still remaining small fish in a big pond. The side characters are probably the best they've been in the series; but unfortunately the storytelling misses the mark. It comes off as trying to appeal to popular trends like streaming, parasocial relationships, cult behavior, and parental abandonment but tries too hard to touch on these topics in humorous ways that it becomes grating. In chasing Handsome Jack as a humorous jackass overlord that slowly begins to treat us a real threat; the Calypso twins are more annoying, and seem to only ever get victories because the plot demands it, not because they're valid threats, and never seem to accept us as their given opponents. I struggle to rationalize how they became bandit warlords, let alone supposed ECHO streaming sensations. To give an example, it's a bit strange that Maliwan is the Act 1 villain, but the bandit cult is the main story one. Of the two, I'd reckon the conflict between megacorps would be the more believable challenge. Subtle as it is, I think the fact we've lost the earnest Angel as our handler, we can often get dragged out of the moment by characters like Tannis who try to fill in, but don't have the character to make being the "voice in our head" work. Lastly, Tales from the Borderlands probably takes the setting and uses it the best of any in the series, embracing the bizarre, comical, and casually violent setting in a way that handles the Telltale format the best. Episodic formatting lets us run a single storyline to its conclusion, with twists and turns that don't get too far off-topic. It's weird, it's humorous; and it bridges the gap between 2 and 3 marvelously.

As a man who has lost over 300,000 souls in my ticker in one setting before, and countless humanities, easily over 2,000 hours i can safely say Keep going It means NOTHING In life and in dark souls Youre still gunna turn the game on and get one shot by some low level scrub And youre still gunna go through multiple areas without dying and even kill multiple bosses first try sometimes without ever taking damage. The levels didnt matter. Its kinda like why rich people dress normal. 500 damage and level 99 isnt gunna make you better at the game. Just more of what you already are. Good or bad.

I really like when writers don't make the character's whole personality about their sexuality. It often makes for a way more interesting character and development in my opinion, I really like to see that representation but when they are more than "gay character 3452 is gay" same with straight relationship in fiction it's interesting when it's not the whole point of a character and it doesn't need to define them, they can just be a random character. LGBTQIA+ characters don't need to be in the spotlight for them to be interesting I think it's even better when they are just that a character they feel more integrated in the story and feel more natural to me at least. I mean no offense against anybody of course it's just my opinion and it may not reflect what a lot of people think. Live the way you want to live and be as happy as you can be no matter who you are 🌈
